BENEFITING: American Hiking Society
ORGANIZER: American Hiking Society
EVENT: Hike 40
Hikes/Trails/Miles Completed: 40
Last year, in order to celebrate a milestone birthday, I hiked 75 miles with my dog, Cisco, in Virginia on the Appalachian Trail. I blogged about it on trailjournals.com here: http://www.trailjournals.com/CatnCisco/. My grandiose plan had been to hike about 300 miles from Catawba, VA to Harpers Ferry, WV. Well, despite some conditioning hikes prior to the AT, I realized pretty quickly that wasn't going to happen, esp. coming from Louisiana. Still, I was pleased with the 75 miles I did and was planning to go back in 2016 to hike 100 miles.
However, soon after returning to Louisiana, while working on my house, I had an unfortunate fall, twisted my knee, and had a complete tear of my ACL. Can you believe that? No significant injuries on the AT, and this, just working around the house! That was in mid-Sept, 2015. Both knees are fairly stable, and there were no additional injuries, so I opted not to have surgery. I have, unfortunately, lost some muscle tone in my injured leg.
My pre-injury plan had been to just add on to the conditioning I had from the AT. As you might imagine, I feel discouraged with this set back, as I've watched my hard earned conditioning ebb away and had some weight gain. :( Having lost a job I had a year ago, funds are limited so I'm doing my physical conditioning on my own. So, can I do this? Can I hike 40 miles? I hope so! We'll see.
I'm a fan of give what you can, and even $1.00 is a fine donation as far as I'm concerned. AHS, however, has a minimum donation of $10. Whether it's $40, or $400, or $4000, it's all good!
I pledge to HIKE 40 miles to support American Hiking Society's Outreach programs, National Trails Day and Families on Foot.
June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society's 24th National Trails Day, the largest celebration of trails in the country. Find an event near you click on nationaltrailsday.americanhiking.org.
The three hikers with the top pledges for American Hiking Society's Outrach program by their 40th birthday on October 13, 2016 will win a prize package including Leki poles, an Adventure Medical Kit, a Columbia backpack.
As they say on the AT "Hike Your Own Hike."
