THE STORY:

Update:

Just wanted to let everyone know I made 7 of the 11 miles I planned for.  It was a long day and a bit hilly but I did it.  Thank you for all the love and support you have shown.

                                   Love,

                                   Ellen

To my friends:

I have decided to challenge myself to an 11 mile hike to raise awareness and funds for the NY Blood Center by participating in the Hike for Life 2016 on Sunday May 15th.  I will be walking along the Greenbelt trail from Blydenburgh Park to Sunken Meadow State Park.  I thought about the 32 mile hike but then remembered that I have limitations thanks to this damn disease.  But I plan to push to the 11 miles.

I am doing this because this cause is very important to me.  In the past I have needed blood on several occasions and have also donated when able to help others in need.  Raising money will help the Blood Center continue to provide safe transfusion products to those in need, as well as research and development of the safest ways to collect and store blood until it is needed.

I will leave the sweat on the trail, tears at the finish line, and help the blood go to where it is needed.  So, please help me raise money for this great cause.  No amount is too small.

Love,

Ellen aka Eleanor

Join us on May 15th for the 10th Annual Hike for Life!

Celebrating 10 years of steadfast partnership, New York Blood Center and Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference are teaming up once again for Hike for Life 2016, an annual fundraising event to raise awareness and financial support for New York Blood Center. The day includes four levels to pick from for the adventures hiker to family friendly, ranging from three to 32 miles.  Proceeds from Hike for Life support New York Blood Center’s life-saving mission in addition to promoting the need for blood donations.

The Hike for Life was started in 2006 by Shari Zagorski, a volunteer hike leader for the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, as a way to raise funds for the New York Blood Center and raise awareness about the need for blood. The event has grown each year and in 2015 we had over 450 hikers and raised more than $40,000 to support New York Blood Center. Proceeds from the Hike for Life go to support New York Blood Center’s operations and life-saving efforts.

The Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference is a unique, non-profit grassroots organization that has created more than 200 miles of hiking paths on Long Island, including three National Recreation Trails. They are dedicated to protecting open space and our scenic Greenbelt trails for all to enjoy. Entry fee of $25 per hiker for all hike distances ($30 starting 5/9/16— $10 child/student).

Good luck Ellen! It is not the miles you complete, but the fact that you tried and helped others in doing so. 3 years ago
