I have a great passion for hiking and for non-profit work. I am combining those interests and will be hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise funds and awareness for the Discover Outdoors Foundation, which supports at-risk students who don't have access to outdoor adventure.
The Discover Outdoors Foundation:
The mission of the Discover Outdoors Foundation is “to positively impact learning through life-changing outdoor experiences.” By encouraging schools to think creatively about learning, the Foundation organizes trips for at-risk students, enabling kids and teachers the ability to safely explore the outdoors. Since its founding in 2012, the Foundation has established partnerships with over thirteen NYC schools (and growing), and over 1,000 students ages 12-18 have benefited from its programs.
A friend and I will be hiking the 2,168 mile trail in sections – meaning that we won’t be hiking the entire distance from Georgia to Maine in one trip – it will take us several trips over several years to complete. This year we will kick off our adventure in October, hiking at least the first 100 miles.
My goal is to raise $2,000 this year. The money raised will be used to provide at-risk youth with programs such as:
After school discovery programs; Half-day explorations; Day trip adventures; Multi-day immersions; Student leadership & certification; and Student scholarship programs. You can read more about the programs offered by the Discover Outdoors Foundation on their website: http://www.discoveroutdoors.org/our-mission.
