Dog About Town NW
Hi! For those of you who don't know me, I am Chris Shafer. I have a blog called Dog About Town NW: www.dogabouttownw.com. DATNW has a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/dogabouttownnw, too. If you know me and DATNW, you know how much I love dogs and hiking. Turns out, I'm not alone. Lots of people enjoy being out on the trail with their pups. Some of us really enjoy sharing photos and information about our hikes with dogs. It gives us pleasure to see canine companions having such a good time in the great outdoors and it's inspiring.
So I was thinking, let's take hiking with dogs to another level and hike for humane education. Red Rover (www.redrover.org) has a humane education program for teachers at the elementary school grade level. The RedRover Readers' curriculum uses high-quality children’s picture books, discussion, and activity guides to help teachers and volunteers lead discussions that promote critical thinking, develop empathy, and help children make better moral and ethical decisions.
My trail dog Riley and I will be hiking throughout the summer and fall. We will be posting reports and photos of our hikes. The donations made at this site will go directly to Red Rover and will be targeted for teachers in school districts in the Inland NW. In 2015, the goal is to humane ed training for 30 - 40 teachers. (It's a start!) If you are inclined to donate, you can do so at any time (and more than once).
If you are inclined to strap on your boots and hike on your own, consider being a team leader. You can be a virtual hiker and be a team member, too. Also, team members can be groups or businesses, as well as individuals. And you don't have to be from the Inland NW to join our pack. Send me an email @ Chris@dogabouttownnw.com with the subject heading of "Team Leader."
Happy tails & trails!
