Joey graduated from Prescott College this May and following literally in the footsteps of his father is walking the Appalachian Trail. My husband was a thru hiker when he completed college 30 years ago! He has already competed half, beginning his journey in Harper's Ferry WV heading north. Joey summited Mt. Katahdin last Thursday. We (parents) also trekked to Maine for 13 days to retrieve him and deposit him back in Harper's Ferry to head south on Sunday the 7th of September. He is in the Shenandoah National Park now. If I failed to include you in the conversations forgive me but we can play catch up!
I have a hilarious picture of him carrying an umbrella during a rainstorm and he chose this manor of gear over the traditional pack cover poncho with hood because it was just too darn hot! On a much awaited phone call from him (I loved his phone and text updates of his journey) he shared his umbrella had given up! I had just recently received a MOD's umbrella at a meeting and told him I would share this with him. I guess it was at that point he started thinking about making the walk serve a tandem purpose. Could his miles be turned into dollars for the nonprofit his mom loved and worked with for years? He brought this up on our next call and said he had been thinking a lot about it and did I know how to make it work.
He still has almost 1,000 miles to go and with the right support we may be able to turn those miles into dollars. He is also walking with his dog Doja who will also earn a thru hiker patch upon completion.
