Hillcrest Elementary students took the Wagon Warrior project to heart. The fifth graders worked collaboratively throughout the entire project to create an art piece that will inspire children with cancer to keep going and brighten the hospital experience. They read books, poems and quotes about inspiration related to the cancer treatment process, brainstormed ideas, drew preliminary sketches, and shared their proposals. These student artists wanted the idea to inspire courage and hope. The fifth graders used Google Docs to share ideas between classes and then they voted on the best idea to represent the vision. “Just Keep Swimming” Dory quote theme was selected and students used zentangle and line drawings which they learned about earlier in the school year to create fish and waves. Every fifth grader at Hillcrest contributed to the wagon through their art, thoughtful ideas, designs, and love. We hope the “Just Keep Swimming” wagon with offer encouragement and make the cancer treatment process just a little easier for children with cancer in Northeast Wisconsin.
