The Historic Village at Allaire is one of the premier living history museums in the state of New Jersey. We preserve and interpret life during the early 1800s and the American Industrial Revolution. We have over 150 dedicated volunteers who range in age from 6 to 102 years old! Our volunteers dress up in costume and demonstrate historic trades and activities. They bring history to life and our visitors can get their hands dirty with some history! Many of our programs are free and open to the public. We believe that history is a right not a privilege.
The Historic Village at Allaire is responsible for the management the historic buildings, which are owned by the State of New Jersey. Traditionally, the State is responsible for maintaining the buildings but due to a lack of capital funds the State has been unable to bring the house to a state of good repair. We have over $8 million in deferred maintenance on our buildings. There is water leaking into archival rooms and places we keep artifacts. The buildings need new paint and window repairs.
We raise 100% of our operating funds and receive no funding from the State of New Jersey. Most of the funds go to support our educational programming by supplying materials for the interpreters. This includes plants for the gardens, metal and coal for the blackmsmiths, tin for the tinsmiths, wood for the carpenters, materials to make costumes and much, much more! Your donations help us make our unique programs possible. Thank you for your support.
Here are some of the programs your donations help support:
$25 purchases a new toy or historic game for the visitors and volunteers to play.
$25 helps keep our programs free or low cost to the visitors.
$30 helps cultivate a garden by buying seeds and flowers
$40 helps supply food for historic hearth cooking demonstrations. This food is a great treat for the volunteers at the end of a long day.
$50 allows us to decorate the historic buildings for the holidays.
$50 helps give the tinsmiths and carpenters materials for a month.
$50 purchases a work shirt for one of our blacksmiths, carpenters, or tinsmiths
$100 donation supplies coal and steel for the blacksmiths for a month.
$300 buys the materials to make a single volunteer their costume. After buying the materials many of the costumes are hand sewn.
$500 sponsors a monster for our haunted hayride fundraisers.
$500 helps preserve a historic artifact or document.
$1000 donation assists in the restoration of a historic building.
