BENEFITING: CITY LORE INC

EVENT: Hive Challenge

THE STORY:

Your donations will enable City Lore, a non-profit located in New York City, to bring an arts in education program, Roots, Routes & Rhythms, to a middle school and a high school in the South Bronx not currently served by our Education Program.  Students in this age group are at a critical time for developing and negotiating a sense of identity both connected to and increasingly independent of their ties to family and community.  Roots, Routes & Rhythms draws on the interests of young people in this age group by making connections between the music and dance cultures that have or had a strong presence in their borough and those that they listen to and perform with their peers. Working with City Lore's extraordinary teaching  artists, such as Peruvian percussionist Hector Morales, Dominican dancer and musician Manuela Arciniegas,  and Cote d'Ivoire dancer Yahaya Kamate,  students will explore how these music and dance forms traveled the world, picking up influences along the way and contributing to new forms in the United States. They will learn about the practitioners of these dance and music traditions who live(d) in their own neighborhood and borough as well as write about and digitally map they ways these music and dance traditions traveled before arriving in their neighborhoods. In addition, they will learn to perform some of these art forms with these wonderful artists. Our goal is to give underserved students in the South Bronx opportunities to learn about their community’s role in the development of important music and dance genres so that they can begin to see themselves as part of rich and venerable traditions that are rooted in and contribute to global musical and dance forms both past and present.  To see a second model City Lore residency see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixvse_WF2J8&index=3&list=PLA5D9C928D63F8099

In memory of my late husband, journalist and writer Marc Crawford, who wrote often about creators of music and artists in the African Diaspora, and who was always mindful of how we all, particularly the youth, need to be nurtured. 3 years ago
