Your support of this campaign allows Schools That Can (STC) and MakerState to create seven ongoing makerspaces in schools serving underserved students. Our makerspace program will teach students (grades K-4) fundamental skills in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) through hands-on projects in robotics, physical computing with microcontrollers, video game design, wearable electronics, and Minecraft engineering. The program will also train seven teachers as STC Maker Fellows who will serve as ongoing STEAM educators and professional developers in their respective schools, districts and communities. This prototype includes underserved schools in New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston in the Fall of 2014.
Your will help us accomplish two goals in this program:
- Foster STEAM passion and skills among underserved elementary students--skills that will prepare them for high academic achievement and career success in our 21st century global economy.
- Empower teachers with ongoing skills to to effectively integrate real-world, hands-on learning pedagogy and protocols into their classrooms. An overall impact for the schools is to have continuous, project-based STEAM learning as part of their core academic program.

One STC Maker Fellow from each school will receive training and materials from MakerState to enable them to facilitate a 10-week course in their school for up to 15 students (“makers”). Throughout the duration of the course, STC Maker Fellows will receive ongoing collaborative supports from both STC & MakerState to share effective strategies and trouble-shoot around obstacles. Supports include regular check-ins, an online collaborative community, and inter-visitations to observe peers’ makerspaces.
- Train and support 7 full-time elementary school teachers (STC Maker Fellows) in facilitating a hands-on, project-based STEAM learning experience, and in empowering students through student-centric strategies
- Develop mastery of STEAM skills and concepts- including engineering and physics- in over 100 students (“makers”)
- Bring together a community of engineers and educators to celebrate student makers’ accomplishments and expose them to future opportunities
- Demonstrate commitment to providing real-world, STEAM-learning opportunities to at-risk youth
- Equip the next generation of graduates with the skills necessary for STEAM careers, which are critical in the 21st century global economy
- Foster the positive development and use of technology that supports social good
- 7 school sites, each with 1 Fellow leading a semester-long makerspace series for 15 makers in grades 1-3, including 10 90-minute workshops/sessions/classes
- 1-day training for STC Maker Fellows, focusing on student empowerment, curricular components, and instructional practices
- MakerState’s award-winning STEM-mastery curriculum in engineering
- All technology and materials necessary to implement the 10 week program
- Technical assistance, professional development, and peer-to-peer learning, facilitated by STC & Maker-State
- Series-culminating Pop Up Makerspace and Student Showcase, to be hosted by sponsoring partner
Program Curriculum: Engineering Makerspace
By creating fun and engaging projects, makers In the Engineering course will learn fundamental physics and mechanical, structural and electrical engineering principles, as well as basic programming concepts. Makers learn the design thinking and prototyping process as developed by the Stanford d.school, and through real-world learning, they develop 21st century skills in creative collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, and interpersonal communication that will empower them both personally and academically.
Each makerspace session features a new project—referred to as Challenges. Challenges include fun builds like the design-derby racer, wearable fashion/superhero LED bracelet & headband, mechanical bridges, paper circuits, mechanical cardboard carnival game, buckyball egg toss, mousetrap-powered car, Rube Goldberg machine, squishy circuits stop lights, and portable egg-tossing machine. Furthermore, makers step through the same key design thinking and prototyping process that professional engineers use every day to solve real world-problems: start with empathy and research to identify the problem and the conditions; then prototype, create, build and test a solution; then iterate to improve.
Each makerspace series culminates with a student-run Pop Up Makerspace & Student Showcase for the greater community. This is a great way to introduce the wider community--students, parents, and community leaders from all participating schools and partners--to the new STEAM passions, skills and confidence that students have developed through makerspace learning.
WHEN: The pilot program will take place in the Fall of 2014. Training will be conducted in September, and makerspaces will begin in October to be completed by the end of the first semester in December.
WHERE: The pilot program will be facilitated across 7 schools, in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Target schools have been identified by STC, and final school sites will be confirmed by September.
WHO: Each school will identify and recruit an STC Maker Fellow who will serve as the lead instructor for the course and will be trained in principles and practices of Maker education before the program begins, and supported throughout the duration.
MakerState empowers kids ages 5-18 with science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) passion and skills through makerspaces in robot engineering, fashion/wearable electronics, video game design, paper circuits, 3D prototyping and printing, comic book creation, and moviemaking.
