Friends and Family,
I've decided to participate in the 2012 Nautica New York City Triathlon. I'm happy to report that after completing the NYC Tri last year, no rapid evolutionary changes were triggered by swimming in the Hudson… No green skin or extra digits… SCORE!
Doing the NYC Tri last year was really fun and I thank you for all of the support you gave me and Team for Kids. This year will be particularly exciting because I will be racing on behalf of a charity/non-profit that I helped start. While getting in shape and participating in a 32 mile race all over Manhattan will be fun, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to raise some money for a great cause. Hopefully you will consider supporting me and Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership ("HLL").
HLL is a non-profit that I helped found with some friends in New York City. The idea was started by our friend who was teaching special education math and science with Teach for America. Aimed at making a positive impact on children both academically and socially through lacrosse, we were the only middle school sports team at Frederick Douglass Academy, a public school in Harlem formerly known as IS 10. We are now a full time non-profit that places lacrosse coaches at Harlem middle schools. We help tutor, coach, and expose students to new experiences. Not only is lacrosse, and team sports in general, a way to open new doors, but it’s also a way to motivate, educate, and teach kids how to be responsible and leaders in their community.
We currently have over 50 middle school students, 40 student alumni, approximately six coaches and a mass of volunteers; last year we were proud to help 2 of our players obtain full scholarships to private boarding schools. Please see our website at http://www.harlemlacrosse.org/ for more information. For 2012, we are excited to be an official charity partner of the Nautica New York City Triathlon.
If you would like to help, any donation would be greatly appreciated and go a long, long way. And… making a donation is really easy. You can click on the “DONATE” button at the top right of this page.
