BENEFITING: HARLEM LACROSSE AND LEADERSHIP CORPORATION
ORGANIZER: HARLEM LACROSSE AND LEADERSHIP CORPORATION
EVENT DATE: Jul 08, 2012
Harlem Lacrosse & Leadership (HLL) is a youth organization that builds leadership skills and social responsibility through lacrosse. I got involved with HLL through my friends from Colorado College, one of whom started it in 2008 while teaching special education, math and science through Teach For America.
HLL began as the only middle school sports team at Frederick Douglass Academy, a public school near W 150th Street formerly known as IS 10, and is now a full time non-profit that places lacrosse coaches at Harlem middle schools and helps enrich the lives of young students through hands on tutoring, coaching and mentoring. Not only is lacrosse a way to open new doors, but it is also a means to motivate, educate, and teach kids how to be responsible and become leaders in their community.
At HLL, we provide a safe and structured setting for our players as we guide them both on and off the field through coaching, mentoring and academic intervention. Broadening players’ experiences and skill sets prepares them to become effective leaders in the Harlem community and beyond.
We currently have over 50 middle school students, 40 student alumni, approximately six coaches and a mass of volunteers; last year we were proud to help two of our players obtain full scholarships to private boarding schools and we hope to open such new doors to several more players this year. Please see our website at http://www.harlemlacrosse.org/ for more information.
We are extremely excited to be an official charity partner of the 2012 Nautica New York City Triathlon. We greatly appreciate any support that you can provide to help us reach our fundraising goals.
