BENEFITING: TRUCKERS AGAINST TRAFFICKING
EVENT DATE: May 16, 2017
Effects of Human Trafficking Locally:
Human trafficking has more than doubled since 2009, and it's right here in the Kansas City area. Kansas City plays a distributing role for human trafficking due to its central location and intersection of major Interstate highways. The US Attorney’s Office in Western Missouri has prosecuted more cases involving human trafficking than any other US district. There were about 12.5 million slaves shipped to the New World from 1525 to 1866, and 60,000 to 70,000 of them ended up in the United States. There are now an estimated 47 million people worldwide in some form of slavery. 2 million children are exploited in the global sex trade. Not 2 million children in all, an additional 2 million children every year. Some of them are as young as two year olds. You may believe it doesn't affect you, but Kansas City is just as vulnerable to human trafficking as anywhere else.
