I have been part of the HOBY family since 2007, when my high school sent me to HOBY NorCal. I'm excited to be back for my 6th year as a HOBY NorCal volunteer and thrilled to be playing a bigger role on the seminar planning team. I've spent the last three years as a group facilitator to ~10 high school sophomores for the weekend and if you could see the change that I see between when they're dropped off on Friday morning and when they're picked up by their families Sunday afternoon, you'd understand in an instant why this program is so important to me and critical to the future of our communities. We frequently talk about how HOBY gives these young adults the tools to be successful leaders in their lives, but we don't always mention that one of those tools is simply the encouragement and the support to believe in the leader in them. Students who attend HOBY leave believing in their own ability to be leader, with a better understanding of the contexts in which their leadership style thrives, and inspired to go make change for the good in their school, their community, or their world.
We're excited to welcome over 100 students from across Northern California to HOBY NorCal this June. It costs us ~$400 to host each student - that includes their housing for the weekend, all their meals, their transportation to/from a community service project, and all their supplies. Any donation is appreciated - $ towards this fundraiser, a case of water or book of stamps, or gift cards to Safeway, Costco, or other places we purchase supplies. We just found out that our venue for Sunday double booked us and we are now facing ~$1,500 in unexpected costs to transport all of our students across town to an alternative venue. Can you help? Thanks a lot & HOBY hugs!
