To my amazing family and fri…
To my amazing family and friends:

I hope you've had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I am emailing to let you know that I finished my last race of the year in FL a few weeks ago, and have thus finished my Sandy Hook Promise Fundraiser.

Because of you, I was able to raise 129% of my $2,600 goal - in honor of the 26 lives lost on 12/14. I am so thankful to each of you for raising $3,365 together to support Sandy Hook Promise's efforts to discuss and promote gun responsibility.

During this week of giving thanks, and as we approach the one year anniversary, I again thank you very much for your thoughtful generosity.

I wish you a wonderful rest of the holiday season!

Fondly,

Buffy

"Sober Houses" provide house…
"Sober Houses" provide house sharing arrangements for those looking to beat their addictions. Each resident must have a JOB & pay rent of $125 per week. "Group therapy" sessions are offered along w/ Alcoholics Anonymous sessions. The residents self-police & if a person "falls off the wagon", he is evicted. I met Mr. & Mrs. Weber who run the Columbia Sober House when they paid a visit to the Rte. 1 Day Center. Evidently the Unitarian Congregation is looking to support yet ANOTHER such facility in the Columbia area & in walking through the Day Center both of them assumed that all of those in attendance were in need of DETOX! I most emphatically had to disabuse both that I was not in need of their"services". inasmuch as I am not an addict dependent on either drugs or alcohol. One of their former clients (who HAD succumbed to temptation & consequently been asked to leave the house) described the facility & its services to me. These coincide with those detailed in a full-color, tripartite brochure for a Carroll County Sober house which also charges $125 per week rent & mandates employment & attendance @ group sessions. My young friend, upon regaining sobriety, then entered yet another Sober House in Anne Arundel county.
With an average rent of $500 per month or $6000 per year to be paid by gainfully employed residents I confess that I fail to understand how $1500 or the $1700+ which you raised will be of use in ending homelessness. If a resident resumes the use of drugs or alcohol they are evicted and since they must be employed & pay rent, how are the fruits of your fundraising efforts to be utilized?
To truly attack addictions I recommend that you peruse the works of Dr. Olivier Ameisen, MD who is an alcoholic who chronicles his descent into the depths of alcoholism & his recovery through the use of baclofen, an anti-anxiety medication that is so old it is no longer under patent. Unlike the AA dicta prohibiting any imbibing for the remainder of one's life, Dr. Ameisen is able to drink 2 1/2 glasses of wine & STOP on his own. I have shared this information w/ physicians, counselors, SWs and addicts in hopes that sufferers might find release. But as with so many things, look @ the infrastructure built up around addicts. What would the "professionals" do if addiction were cured?
As I recall you & Mr. Bittner had wanted to interview me regarding homelessness but I doubt that that will ever occur.

Please do not equate homelessness w/ mental illness or addictions. You are to be commended for your efforts @ Crowdrise to raise funds to assist homeless individuals secure housing, however do not assume that all are in need of "recovery".
