THE WHY: It seems like every year, just after the shopping center doors shut on black Friday, the city explodes with Holiday spirit! Decorations, music, snow, holiday ads everywhere you turn, ice skating, lights...you get the picture. Coffee places start to release those foamy pepperminty drinks that taste like liquid candy and bakeries/grocery stores stock up on holiday themed chocolates, candy canes, gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, glazed hams, pies, chocolate coins, mashed potatoes, you name it! After all, 'Tis the season.......TO EAT!
While some of us are enjoying the bounty the holiday season provides, others have to go without. Did you know that 26% of people in Milwaukee are living below the poverty level? Did you also know that 11% of people in Wisconsin live in a state of food insecurity (meaning these households do not have proper access to food)? That means that there are about 157,239 people living below poverty in Milwaukee and a whopping 628,294 people in Wisconsin dealing with food insecurity.
We need to do something about this. But the good news is, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You just have to hop on the train! No, we’re not talking about the polar express…we are talking about linking up with The Gathering this holiday season to help feed the hungry.
THE WHAT: The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin works to stop hunger one person at a time, one day at a time. We serve ten free, nutritious meals a week at three inner city sites to over 95,000 of Milwaukee’s hungry and homeless each year…but we do more than food! By partnering with mental health agencies, legal assistance organizations and supply distributors, we are also able to bring necessary services to those in need.
THE HOW: Here is how it works: If you make a donation TODAY to our holiday fundraiser, we will give you a present! Our guests and volunteers have worked together to bake and decorate Christmas ornaments (they smell delightfully like gingerbread! But don’t eat them…they’re just for decoration...) When you fill out your donation form, you can type in the box that says, “Comment, In Memory, Tribute” your name and address and we will make sure you receive a beautiful ornament! Or, if the holiday season is making you feel extra generous, you can type in someone else’s name and we will send them an ornament FROM you! (That’s what we call…DOUBLE GIVING! It makes you doubly a good person.)
Here is an example of what your ornament may look like:
But wait…IT GETS BETTER! We have a MATCHING DONOR who will match the $ amount of our holiday donations…SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
THE WHERE: Where might your donation go, you ask? Here are some examples of what your $$s may go towards:
$5.00 can supply breakfast for 2 people
$15.00 can supply a week’s worth of meals for 1 guest (5 breakfasts and a Sat lunch)
$25.00 can support 1 produce session (where we preserve extra produce for use in winter meals!)
$50 can supply fresh milk for one meal serving 250 guests
So please reach down into the depths of your hearts—and wallets—and help us help our neighbors! Give the gift of a healthy meal!
