Half Marathon Success!!!

Dear Friends,

We did it!!! I crossed the finish line and we raised in excess of our goal sum! Thank you.

To sum up, the Half Marathon fund raiser in Luang Prabang for the Lao Children's Hospital was a huge success. We're not sure how much was raised in total, but I believe it's in the tens of thousands of dollars. I'm so proud that we as a group raised US$598.

This return visit confirmed to Luang Prabang confirmed my first impression from my stay in 1992. It's a very special place; the kind of place you dream of going back to and would do anything to revisit. Even if you have to train for, and run, a Half Marathon to get to Luang Prabang it's worth it!

For those who are interested, the run went well. I followed my race plan carefully including popping caffeine pills, taking energy giving gels and, more importantly, running my heart out. I even achieved my goal of completing the 21km Half Marathon in under two hours, squeaking in at 1 hour and 58 minutes. Phew!

Most amazingly I came in 4th woman and 17th overall out of 303 Half Marathon runners - not too shabby for a middle aged mama with a fear of sweating and getting of breath. I still don't like sweating or getting puffed out but I guess I've overcome that fear and learnt that extreme exercise doesn't kill you. It just feels like it might!

I'm proud that somehow I stayed strong and maintained an average pace of 5:37mins/km through the run, despite an average heart rate of 174 beats per minute. My average resting heart rate is 42 beats per minutes so that's fast.

For those who want proof, here are photos of me crossing the finish line, having a much needed sit down and feeling rather emotional immediately after completing the run and a close up of the medal. You can find the full results on sportstats.asia too and I'll share more photos on Get In the Hot Spot as soon as I can.

I'm glad the run is over. I don't plan to repeat anything like this again as it does take a toll on the ageing body. The next day my legs were so stiff you'd have thought I'd climbed Everest. But I am so happy I did it and so grateful for the part you played.

Thank you all for your amazing support. It means so much to me and the lovely people of Laos. I truly hope you get to visit Luang Prabang one day to see where your donations went and experience the languid, spiritual feel of the town.
