That's right y'all... we made it to round 2!  The slate is wiped clean and we are matched against a new project to see who can get the most See More

This project will improve health outcomes by stopping violence before it starts. Leveraging behavioral tools, the program engages young, at-risk adolescent boys, ages 11 to 14 years old, from underserved districts in Barranquilla, Colombia. Through workshops and youth-driven media campaigns, the boys will learn about domestic violence prevention and become advocates for change. Participants will undertake a month-long series of play-based workshops on relevant themes, including power, oppression, the effects of gender expectations, and healthy communication techniques. The project will enlist older adolescent volunteers to help lead the workshops and create positive role models for the boys. The campaigns will be designed by the students with the help of the volunteers, and will be disseminated to each participant's online social circle. If this pilot program is successful, it could be scaled-up regionally in the Atlantic region of Colombia.

Hombres Verdaderos was recently featured in Big Ideas News—read more about the project here.

What we have so far: a 5K mini-grant from Big Ideas@Berkeley to begin the project to cover the cost of the curriculua and materials for 60 participants. What we need: 2.5K more to cover interviews, questionnaires, focus groups, transcriptions and translations for the impact evaluation, and add additional 20 youth to the second cohort of participants.

What makes us different:  1) we are combining on best practices from a myriad of different violence presention programs, 2) we are harnessing peer influence and support by empowering youth to learn and eventually lead the program, 3) we are rigorously evaluting this pilot program.

Team members of the proejct include Jairo Alexander and Vanessa Sanchez of the Ministry of Gender Equity in the Atlantic region of Colombia, and Nerissa Nance, current Master of Public Health candidate at UC Berkeley.
