Homecoming for Fawzia
Organized by: Lauren Goldberg
July 06, 2016
Fawzia and her eight-year-old son, Talal are in urgent need of monetary support as they transition out of a local shelter and into their new home in Athens, Ohio. Fawzia is from Saudi Arabia and has been in Athens, Ohio for a number of years. She came with her husband -- an international student at Ohio University. The relationship was an abusive one and she sought legal recourse while here, which resulted in his deportation. Fawzia and Talal have applied for a U Visa--an asylum status--and are going through the long process of attaining this visa and eventually a green card. Although Fazia is here LEGALLY her status as awaiting a U Visa does not allow Fawzia to be employed, and there are no long-term free shelters in Athens, Ohio. Although Fawzia is here legally, she lingers in a strange liminal bureaucratic place that makes it difficult for her to provide for her and her son. Yet, she is one of Athens' most civically involved community members--volunteering every day at local organizations, and becoming a part of the fabric of Athenian life.
We are happy to annouce that Fawzia, with the support of local individuals and organizations, has signed a lease for their first apartment! It is time for Fawzia and Talal to have a permanent, safe, family-friendly home outside of the crisis center in which they have been living for over two years. But it is an expensive new adventure that they are about to begin and this generous soul needs the support that she has so readily given to others. Please consider giving this gift of a new start to two incredible new members of the Athens community!
