BENEFITING: HOMELAND DISCIPLES INC
As part of a community that has experienced a growing population of homeless and indigent, our intent is to continue to provide a combination of individual meals, take away lunch meals and packaged food items to approximately 85 – 95 people (men and women) weekly utilizing a downtown Norfolk park as a distribution. We use meal planning to ensure meals served are healthy choices rather than last minute quick fix selections stretching the food dollar. Funds will be used to provide a variation of healthy, nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for those served. We are working towards a community where no one is living on the streets and their transformation in life has become one of being self-sufficient and productive. We strive to be an encouragement and consistent inspiration to the homeless and indigent helping to mend their brokenness from life’s difficult situations and returning them to constructive, independent and self-sustaining neighbors within our community. Experience has shown that people who enter and remain homeless for a number of various reasons: lack of affordable housing, lack of employment, mental health issues or physical disabilities, low wage paying jobs. Therefore, one cannot assume that food sharing perpetuates homelessness. Food sharing allows those who are homeless a common ground between themselves and those providing meals to develop trust and confidence. This relationship creates opportunity for the donor to begin to provide assistance to the homeless individual that may evolve into a reversal of hard life situations for the homeless individual. There are many Americans going hungry daily perpetuating illness; anemia, dental problems, gastric ulcers, other gastrointestinal complaints, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, acute and chronic infectious diseases, and diabetes, etc. Each of these issues and those not listed foster a drain on public government resources that could potentially be applied to more beneficial programs. Homelessness within our community brings responsibility. Like it or not we will all be held responsible for our actions or lack thereof. Our program undertakings accepts and responds to that responsibility to continue the transformation of those less fortunate into neighbors who are self sufficient, productive and who will re-blend in to society. We use meal planning to ensure meals served are healthy choices rather than last minute quick fix selections stretching the food dollar. Funds will be used to provide a variation of healthy, nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner meals for those served.
