Our team goal this year is to raise $50,000 to provide childcare for our shelter guests. It’s an essential need for our guests so they are able to work and save money as they move towards independent living. Funding for childcare subsidies will no longer be available to HSI as of August 31, 2016, which makes this fundraising effort SO important.
Why We Need to Raise Money for Childcare:
Homeless Solutions’ philosophy is “A Hand Up, not a Hand Out”, and for over 33 years we have been offering shelter, services, and supportive housing to the homeless and working poor in Morris County, New Jersey.
Childcare is an essential need in assisting our guests so they are able to work and save money as they move towards independent living.
“There are a lot of other families like me at Homeless Solutions – they’re good people who are working hard to help themselves. But they just need a boost to get where they need to go. The childcare assistance gives that boost that moms like me need. It lets people work and lets people save so they don’t have to be homeless anymore.”

Try to imagine having to decide between paying the rent, paying for groceries or paying for childcare. That is the same childcare that lets you go to work and earn a minimum wage as a barista at Starbucks, cashier at ShopRite or a nurse’s aide at Morristown Medical Center.
Now imagine losing your home because you spent the rent money on groceries. Or you lost your job and then your home because you had to stay with your children because childcare was too expensive.
This is the case with over 10,000 families in New Jersey struggling to survive that nightmare every day. Most of them are headed by single women with more than one child. Most are survivors of domestic violence.
The cost of childcare in the Morris County area depends on the age of the child, hours of care needed (mornings, afternoons, all-day) and the childcare center’s operating costs, but typically ranges from $950/month to $1,900/month for full time care. That is more than most of our mothers earn in a month. Plus, infant care is always more expensive.
We know how to help end their nightmare. Homeless Solutions has been doing it for 33 years. But the Federal government has decided to make it a lot tougher. Which is why we are asking for your help now.
