Homes for Haiti

THE STORY:

I am a member of Christ Church Riverdale in New York City. Our parish outreach committee would like to be of assistance in providing housing for those displaced by the earthquake in Haiti. We are partnering with Kleiwerks International to provide a sustainable building workshop there. Rev. Nathaniel St. Pierre of the Haitian Congregation of the Good Samaritan in the Bronx has suggested that we provide the workshop to students in the Partnership Program of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti. I have been in contact with Kesner Ajax, who is the director for that program, and he likes our idea.

The goal of the workshop is to provide training in earthquake resistant and sustainable building methods in Port-au-Prince. Participants would use the training to help others build homes for themselves. In that sense, the workshop would not be a one-time event, but a means of perpetuating shelter and empowerment many times over.

The total cost of a three day workshop for 12 students led by one instructor would be $3,000 (approximately $250.00 per student). A generous donor in our parish has contributed a portion toward that amount. We are working to raise funds for the remaining balance and hope to implement the workshop in early 2011.
