HomeStart has over two decades of proven experience ending homelessness in Greater Boston. By utilizing a three-prong approach, HomeStart can eradicate homelessness in Boston permanently. Our Housing Search department finds homes for individuals currently living in the shelter or on the streets. After placement, HomeStart's Stabilization advocates provide wrap-around services to help these individuals reintegrate into the community. Advocates provide budget assistance, obtaining MBTA passes and identification, identifying other resources and a shoulder to lean on. The results are outstanding, after one year of these services, 96% of these individuals remained housed.
HomeStart's innovative Homelessness Prevention Program stops homelessness before it starts by preventing the evictions of families who need a helping hand. These families live at or below the poverty line and suffer a financial setback due to an unforeseen life event, such as an illness and cannot pay rent. HomeStart intervenes with a one-time grant (on average $700) ceasing the eviction and works with the families for a year to pay off the remainder of rent owed. With HomeStart's assistance, 98% of the families who were on the edge of becoming homeless remained in their homes one year later.
Jennifer Sciamanna and Rachel Wolsfelt have committed to running 26.2 miles and to raise $16,000 to end and prevent homelessness. 90 cents of every dollar they raise will go directly to HomeStart's core programs.
$700 can save a family from the trauma of homelessness, and $1,030 will house a homeless individual.
Please, support Jennifer and Rachel and congratulate them on taking on this tremendous task.
