BENEFITING: Homestretch, Inc.
Homestretch empowers homeless parents with children to move from crisis and poverty to financial independence and long-term stability. 65% are survivors of domestic violence or human trafficking. Homestretch moves the family into a home, freeing the parents from worry of having a safe place to live, and works with the family to identify and address all the barriers in their path to safety and self-sufficiency. We help them create individualized plans of action that focus on measurable goals.
While in Homestretch, parents create safety plans, secure employment, acquire skills, establish savings accounts, reduce their debts and restore credit, and improve their health. Homestretch services include case management, an employment center, scholarships for academic or vocational schools, life skills and parenting classes, therapy, credit counseling, ESOL classes, after-school programs for teens, a nursery and licensed pre-school, and a wide variety of services for children. The aim is to equip the families to turn their crisis into opportunity.
Homestretch works because of its unique combination of support for and high expectations of our clients, along with a safe environment amid a community of peers. Ninety percent graduate, having gained confidence and the tools they need to maintain long-term self-sufficiency. When they leave us, the parents typically have a job and an affordable home, their debts are paid off, and they have savings in the bank. Their children are safe and secure, with a solid educational base. And, their success continues-three independent studies have demonstrated that two years after graduation, 95% of Homestretch clients are still working and living in their own homes.
Graduates from Homestretch- all whom came to us homeless and in crisis have become nurses, accountants, teachers, social workers, realtors, pastors, mortgage brokers, commercial drivers, chefs, retail store managers, day care owners, pharmacy techs, dental hygienists, master plumbers and business analysts. One recent graduate became a licensed pharmacist, another a doctor. The Homestretch model proves that with the right structure and support, no one has to remain mired in homelessness, domestic abuse or poverty forever.
