BENEFITING: Covenant House
ORGANIZER: Covenant House
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2016
John, a young man who lives at Covenant House, and Hayes, a young man who just graduated from our program, are running the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon this year as members of the Home Team. As we often say about the young people at Covenant House, the least interesting thing about them is their homelessness - that is most certainly true in this case.
Both John and Hayes are naturally athletic. They share a love of basketball and both strive to push past their own limits - both at practice on the court, in training to run 13.1 miles on March 20, and in pursuing their dreams to move forward in their lives from where they are now.
After a lifetime of tough breaks and stunted opportunity, John has spent the last year living at Covenant House, surrounded by a supportive family of staff and fellow residents and gaining independence from his past. Later this year John will be trying out for the NBA Development League, pursuing a career in athletics.
Hayes doesn’t talk much about his life before Covenant House, but his dreams reveal how he feels about overcoming them: he is currently working on revisions to the second draft of a science fiction novel, set in a world of his own creation with characters who are survivors and trailblazers. As Hayes says, “Whether we think we are capable of surviving anything, we want to hope we can,” and he is sharing that message with others.
These talented, strong, motivated, creative young men deserve to cross finish lines and accomplish their dreams. Please support them, and the thousands of other young people who find hope at Covenant House each year, with a donation to the Home Team in their honor.
