Hong Kong Shark Foundation
About Hong Konh Shark Foundation
Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) is a registered charity dedicated exclusively to shark conservation. We aim to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to enlist support in consumption of shark products in Hong Kong. We work strategically with other groups in Hong Kong to: i) reduce significantly the consumption of shark fin in Hong Kong; and ii) improve regulation of the trade.
HKSF’s overall strategy is to influence behaviour reducing the demand for shark fin soup and to create a policy environment to enable regulatory change. It focuses on four pillars of activity:
• Political advocacy;
• Corporate advocacy – both to the providers of banquets and their customers;
• Raising Consumer Awareness, and
• Community Education
To this end, HKSF has engaged the local community, working with a large number of schools and holding a series of high profile events ranging from plankmobs and freezemobs to shark free wedding competitions as well as Ocean Art Walk 2013. Working with Pew Charitable Trusts in 2012, HKSF galvanised 41 leading marine scientists from around the world to collectively write to the Hong Kong government to inform policy makers of their scientific concerns. HKSF has also engaged with key legislative council members, as part of their strategy of political advocacy in HK. In doing so HKSF has successfully educated and brought attention to the issue via a variety of media.
HKSF has, with WWF Hong Kong, ADM Capital Foundation and BLOOM Association, also successfully pulled together a coalition of NGOs primarily based in Hong Kong with similar shark conservation interests; the aim of which is to ensure that each individual organisation’s efforts are leveraged as much as possible and opportunities for collaboration are realised.
