THE STORY:

Veteran Entrepreneurs Today
Overview
Starting in 2014 unprecedented numbers of veterans will re-enter the job market, joining hundreds of thousands of former military troops currently seeking employment.

The current job market is limited. Many veterans face significant challenges in finding a job. In fact, studies show that unemployment among veterans age 24-35 is as high as 17%. The inability to obtain employment is recognized as a major contributor to veteran depression, divorce, and despair.

VET is a pilot program produced and supervised by Honoring Our Troops, a San Diego based non-profit corporation, dedicated to filling the needs of returning veterans in conjunction with LizardBrain/MonkeyMind Productions, a locally owned organization whose principals have 70+ years experience in working with small business owners. VET is dedicated to supporting returning vets, particularly veterans with service connected disabilities, to startup and maintain small businesses.

Concept
Business ownership, the backbone of the US economy, is a recognized route to prosperity, self-respect, and independence. Furthermore, many disabled vets are not in a position to meet the demands of employment, but can prosper in their own business.
The many steps of independent business startup and management can be confusing. The ability to set goals and take action is an essential, bedrock requirement for success. This program establishes a “think tank” group of veterans, with an emphasis on veterans with service connected disabilities, who express an interest in starting their own business. The group meets weekly, shares challenges, and gains insights. Together they focus on goals and action steps with accountability to each other and the group leaders.
VET musters local small business community experts on topics such as marketing, legal issues, taxes, management, human resources, and other small business concerns to provide weekly topic presentations.
The Group Dynamic
“Master Mind groups” are not new in the business world. The benefits of a well-run Master Mind group are as follows:
1. Influx of new ideas and fresh perspectives
2. Staying positive and motivated
3. Accountability and responsibility
4. A shortened learning curve
5. Exposure to the business community and resources
Accountability is key to the success of participants. Each participant receives a Workbook and other materials. Each participant will be required to fill out a “Goals Win/Win” sheet, which is handed in to the Moderator. Members will receive an “accountability” phone call during the week. This call will to encourage action and progress.
Veteran Participation
Veteran participation is free to qualified participants. Applicants are interviewed in advance and admitted to the program according to objective criteria. Accepted participants are required to commit to a minimum of twelve weeks of weekly group attendance.
