Hoops for Humanity 2014
Organized by: Mohammad Khatri
EVENT DATE Sep 13, 2014
Hoops For Humanity was inspired by an event thrown in Houston (Hoop4Palestine). Our goal is to raise money, awareness, and support for two charities: Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) and Save the Children’s efforts in Syria.
The long-term ceasefire in Gaza is amazing news, and we hope that stops the unwarranted deaths of innocent civilians. But there is a lot more work to be done. Homes have been razed, hospitals have been levelled, and schools have been demolished. There are orphaned children in Gaza whose only hope is the generous support of people like you.
The situation in Syria is dire. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has called the situation in Syria, “the worst humanitarian crisis of our era.” Since 2011, 200,000 people have died, 6.5 million people displaced, half of which are children. The children of Syria have been victims of chemical attacks, rape, torture, mutilation, starvation, and a host of other unspeakable crimes. And there seems to be no end in sight.
We have been blessed with so much. We have jobs to get money from, schools to get our education from, and homes to come back to. We do not know what it feels like to be without a home, without a family, without any means of support. But there are children who live in that world. Our brothers and sisters face that reality every single day. We have an opportunity to make some small, positive impact on the lives of these people.
