As friends and alumni of the University of Virginia, we think back fondly upon the days we spent on the Lawn, a place of study erected by one of our Founding Fathers and steeped in our nation’s history and traditions. These formative days leave an indelible mark. So every day, we strive to uphold the values of the University of Virginia and our Honor Code.
The Honor Code is both a sacred core value of the University and the foundation of the student experience. The Honor Code exhorts all students and alumni to live with integrity and civility. This is essential today more than ever before, because our community is open to people of every race and religion. We welcome diverse backgrounds and thoughtful debate with open arms, to advance respect and understanding among our community and the world.
In this spirit, we condemn the actions of white supremacist Richard B. Spencer (CLAS '01). His words and actions promote mindless fear and incite the worst kind of hatred against large groups of the U.S. population—violating the spirit of the University of Virginia’s Honor Code. Thanks to the education we were lucky to obtain at the foot of Jefferson’s Rotunda, we have seen the worst lessons of history. And we have no wish to repeat them.
We urge you to act with us and demonstrate your opposition to the words and actions of Richard B. Spencer by contributing to the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The IRC in Charlottesville does the challenging work of welcoming, resettling, and integrating refugees. Helping these refugees—people whose lives have been marked by the loss of home, family, and friends—is the honorable thing to do.
Thus, we support IRC’s efforts and denounce those like Spencer who consider refugees a threat. Instead, these refugees belong to a long tradition of generations of Americans who came here before us under similar circumstances. We stand proudly with them—and against those who would incite hatred and violence against them.
