Final Prep for the Race--Please Consider Donating
February 03, 2017
I am running to honor my son Tanner Underwood. Tanner was 13 when he was severely hurt in a car accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He spent the next seven months in four different hospitals, in a coma for the first several months. When he emerged we began to get a feel for the difficult road of recovery he faced.
More than four years have passed and Tanner has made great progress while still encountering significant difficulties with speech, memory, walking, and left arm and hand movements. He spends most days in therapy and finishing his final two remaining credits to graduate from high school.
Tanner has had many people rally around him. We've been helped in lots of ways. Hope 4 Minds provided a significant grant to Tanner to enable him to obtain an advanced device that teaches his nerves in his left arm and hand to re-awaken, facilitating greater movement. Their support has been not only financial but also emotional and spiritual. Groups like this don't use the word "hope" lightly in their names.
The mission of Hope 4 Minds is to foster hope and enrich the lives of children with an acquired brain injury through support and education.
When a child experiences a serious brain injury following an accident, it can be paralyzing for the family. HOPE4MINDS provides guidance, advocacy and financial support for these children and their families.
At the heart of their services is the conviction that the health and well-being of these children can improve over time if they have access to therapeutic services, adaptive equipment and educational materials.
My hope is that someday Tanner can participate in an event like this to help raise funds to provide hope to others behind him on the same path he's faced. Your funds help to faciliate these goals and tells others that they're not alone in their struggles.
