I'm running in honor of a special 5 year old little girl named Charley. My daughter calls Charley her best friend, and her mother is a best friend of mine; their entire family is very imporant to my family.
On June 3rd, 2016, Charley and her family were driving to Oklahoma City from Austin when they were struck by another car from the other side of the highway. Charley suffered multiple injuries to include a brain injury. She spent a few months in OKC first at Children's hospital followed by an acute care facility there. Once she had gained some stabilization, she was moved to Dell Children's in-patient rehab facility in the Austin area. She's endured several surgeries, a blood infection and a number of other challenges. In the 7 plus months since the accident, Charley has worked so hard to move forward with her healing. She's made some great progress and got to return home just before the holidays! What a blessing! Charley's a determined, strong willed, focused little girl who's putting in her maximum effort during her extensive physical and speech therapy. We're all very grateful for how far she's come and pray for continued strength for Charley and her family as they move forward with her recovery efforts. We all hope to see Charley chasing her older brother and sister around, picking up frogs, riding her bike in a fancy pink dress and and anything else she desires, in the near future!
Shannon, Charley's mom, recently told me about Hope4minds, a nonprofit that provides support and assistance to families who have a child with a brain injury. Any donation you give to this amazing organization is greatly appreciated! I'll be running with Charley in my mind, as well as other children like her who've suffered a traumatic brain injury.
From the Hope4minds website..."When a child experiences a serious brain injury following an accident, it can be paralyzing for the family. HOPE4MINDS provides guidance, advocacy and financial support for these children and their families. At the heart of our services is the conviction that the health and well-being of these children can improve over time if families have access to educational materials, therapeutic services and adaptive equipment for their chidren. We also believe families can gain strength by connecting with one another. To provide these crucial services, we need your help. Every dollar makes a difference. With your generous gift, you make it possible to keep hope alive-one precious child at a time".
