On July 26th Leslie found a lump. Triple negative breast cancer. A month of appointments, tests and referrals have landed her in the best possible hands of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. Leslie is still in the information gathering phase of her treatments. This week she met with the multidisciplinary team at the Mayo Clinic Breast Center who ordered more tests and provided more information and therapy opinions. On this day, Leslie does not know the exact treatment plan to attack her cancer. What she does know is that it will be exhaustive, expensive and most important life saving! As medicine gets better at treating breast cancer, Leslie at age 28 knows her future includes having children. With Leslie's type of cancer, treatment often starts with chemotherapy, of which the recommended protocol is known to cause premature ovarian failure (ie- early menopause). This may mean Leslie will be unable to have biological children in the future. Preserving her fertility is very important to Leslie. Tomorrow Leslie starts down a path she never thought of- IVF protocols to harvest eggs for freezing for the future. This is what we know today. Leslie starts TOMORROW 8/24/16 on medications to hyperstimulate her ovaries for egg retrieval. The expeditious nature is indicated because any delay has a ripple effect to the start of her cancer treatment. The cost of this is not covered by her insurance, as it is not for the treatment of infertility but for the preservation of fertility. A lot of people have offered to help Leslie in any way. While today we ask for the immediate help for preserving Leslie's future fertility and quality of life, please also consider the coming months when Leslie starts chemotherapy, undergoes surgery to remove part or all of her breasts, radiation and ultimately plastic surgery to reconstruct her breasts. The Mayo Clinic is a 7 hour drive from home. Gas, hotel stays and food costs are all considerations in addition to copays, deductibles and out of pocket maximums. A monetary gift to Leslie will help ease one burden on her mind while she navigates this new and terrifying road of cancer. We promise frequent updates to keep you up to date in this new journey life has taken her down. Thank you for any donation you can give. Together we can give hope back to Leslie.
