HOPE plans to use the Art Van Charity Challenge as an opportunity to seed our aspirations for a new building. HOPE is in need of a new building house our Recuperative Care Center as well as a desperately needed family shelter for Oakland County.
Currently HOPE Recuperative Care Center (RCC) is housed in rented space too small for the community demand and it s located about three miles from our adult shelter. Our RCC is an innovative, unique program which helps homeless individuals who are unfortunate enough to have been discharged 'home' from and area hospital but have no 'home' where they can recover from illness, injury, surgery, etc. Fulfilling the goal of building a new shelter will allow HOPE to expand RCC from 10 to 30 beds.
In Oakland County there is no family emergency shelter- it is a desperate need for the 600 homeless families that live here. The truly sad statistic is that the average age of Oakland County’s 4,000 homeless people is 7 years old. This instability for children can lead to a host of other problems as they grow and develop into members of society. It is our goal to help keep families together by providing them with temporary shelter until they are able to move into permanent housing. With this new building, HOPE is looking to add family shelter to our programming to meet the needs of the numerous homeless families in Oakland County.
The new building will house vitally needed homeless services but it will also continue the work that HOPE has ongoing in the neighborhood. HOPE has been a catalyst in advocating the demolition of abandoned/vacant houses to improve safety and strengthen the neighborhood. The planned expansion of HOPE, which will comprise the block north of the existing shelter, seeks to continue to improve the esthetic and safety of the Baldwin Corridor. Additionally, HOPE plans to incorporate area for a community based health clinic in the new building to serve our guests as well as neighborhood residents.
