THE STORY:

Hi There!! I’m Dinesh Fernando. I Studied at St Anthony's College, Kandy, Sri Lanka (Batch 2006) Here is my story. To start I had always felt healthy and had never had any serious health issues. 3-4 months I was losing my weight up to 25-30KG. Out of the blue one day it was a charming cold evening in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday 09th December 2014, I began having bad chest pains, fever & chills. I felt a strong pressure, like a vice grip was squeezing my chest and left neck. I feared I was having a heart attack. I ran to the NMC Specialty Hospital & My local doctor did a chest x-ray & a CT scan and saw a mass in my chest. He showed it to me and said that although he thought it was likely cancerous, he could not diagnose it based on an x-ray or CT alone. This all happened 3 months after my wedding & lovely wife Antonette came to Dubai, while we were just planning to start our new life in Dubai with so much joy & happiness. One of my good friends in Dubai, who is a nurse practitioner and works for a local pulmonologist, got me in with a pulmonary specialist that evening. An immediate CR (computed radiography) scan was ordered. The pulmonologist told us he thought I had Lymphoma, well me I did not know what is Lymphoma all about but he would be more certain after seeing the scan. The next day, we went back in and he said he was 95 percent certain of the diagnosis, but I would need a biopsy to confirm. The biopsy had to be done in the same NMC Specialty Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Sukrith Shetty. This was the first surgical procedure in my cancer journey. The doctor made an incision and took 35-40 specimens from the mass from behind my breastbone. This time, the results took three to four weeks. In the meantime, I was in shock and felt gripped by terror. I was nervous and unable to sleep. My family did a lot of praying, and found that our faith helped keep us strong. As the days went by waiting for the results from Asiri Surgical Hospital Colombo, I started feeling more optimistic and our friends and family kept a positive outlook. I didn’t want to believe that I could have cancer. We interpreted the delay of my biopsy results as indicating that I probably didn’t have cancer. That interpretation turned out to be incorrect. After an excruciating wait, we finally got the call with the test results from Parkway Cancer Centre Singapore I had aggressive Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. It is difficult living with the thought that the cancer could relapse at any time. However, I’m under the care of my Consultant Haemato-Oncologist Dr. Saman Hewamana is helping me feel confident that if the disease does reach a point where it will be crucial, I am in good hands. I know they are doing their best to catch any changes as soon as possible. In the meantime, we are living our lives with helping hands with others. I have been married to my lovely wife for only for 1.5 years, and we plan on many more years together. We love spending time together with our friends mostly. But this unfortunate thing happened to my life. Me & my wife came back from Dubai for my treatments on 20th Jan 2015 and had under gone a set of Chemotherapy. After 14 cycles of Chemotherapy & other tests I underwent PET/CT Scan Asiri Surgical Hospital Colombo on 08th August 2015 and the scan report also came not normal. Afterwards the doctor was re directing me to Mount Elizabeth Hospital Novena, Singapore for a re clarification & repeat scan to be done on 15th September 2015. Unfortunately it was also the same as previous one. Well it is a really challenging time period for me as I'm facing so many financial difficulties as both me & my wife is now on unemployment condition of our organizations & we have only another few weeks of time to spend unless otherwise they will no longer keep me as an active employee due to my health condition. All are praying that I can be cured. However, my doctor is recommending further treatments that will cost me over Rs. 8,000,000. Including Chemotherapy & an Autologous Stem Cell Harvest/Transplantation in Singapore ASAP followed by the harvesting on coming January with an estimate cost of Rs. 1,500,000. As it is still unavailable in Sri Lanka it has been directed to Singapore. Furthermore I thoroughly believe that the people in Sri Lanka & the whole world will hold my hands in this challenging situation. Please give me a breath to live. Please give me life. Yours Sincerely, Dinesh Fernando No. 539/B, Uthuwankanda, Mawanella-71500, Sri Lanka
