BENEFITING: THE FORGOTTEN INTERNATIONAL
HOURS PLEDGED: 240
In Chorrillos, Lima, Mama Victoria is a small, grass roots organization started by a Peruvian woman who fled domestic abuse. Uneducated, she realized that she had no hope unless she created it herself. She started Mama Victoria as a shelter, school and resource center for women and children fleeing from domestic abuse. Sadly, 1 in 3 women in Peru report being either sexually or physically abused by someone close to them and there is little done to prevent this from happening.
Mama Victoria hopes to change this and I want to help them. In the summer of 2011, I spent 3 amazing months working at their school and I created their first website. I did this to gain attention to their cause and teach them about the benefits of using technology. I taught them how to use the website and now they are using it to get donations, attract volunteers and educate people about what domestic abuse is and how women can stop it.
Unfortunately, in late December the property where Mama Victoria is got raided, several things were stolen and the women staying there were terrorized. They would like to build a 10-foot fence around the property to prevent further break-ins. I want to help raise funds for this project.
