Each year an estimated 3.3 million children and 1.3 million women are exposed to domestic violence in their homes. Children growing up with domestic violence show the signs of it. They deal with nightmares, post-traumatic stress, fear, anger, sadness, and enormous anxieties around separation and loss. Many have a tremendous sense of guilt, difficulty concentrating, trouble resolving conflicts and learning difficulties.
Children raised in abusive homes learn that violence is an effective way to resolve conflicts and problems. Girls who witness their mothers’ abuse often believe that threats and violence are the norm in relationships and, consequently, frequently become victims of domestic abuse as adults.
