Focus: HOPE is launching an exciting new collaboration to improve the lives of children and families in Detroit!
The HOPE Village neighborhoods, the 100 blocks surrounding Focus: HOPE's campus in the heart of Detroit, presents a microcosm of the educational, economic, and environmental challenges faced by the city. To address these challenges and transform this community, we must nurture our most powerful resource—the young people who live here.
Focus: HOPE is excited to introduce the Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools, a national summer program that promotes the development of strong, literate, and empowered young people. Beginning this summer, the HOPE Village Freedom School will equip multiple generations of youth with the skills to be leaders and change agents in the community.
But we need your help!
Because the HOPE Village Freedom School will operate at no cost to families, we rely on philanthropic support to turn this dream into reality.

Inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, CDF Freedom Schools uses a multicultural reading curriculum led by college-aged interns to combat summer learning loss, encourage a love of reading, promote empowerment and civic engagement, engage families, and support intergenerational leadership development.
The first HOPE Village Freedom School will serve 50 early elementary children whose families live or work in the HOPE Village, the 100-block area surrounding Focus: HOPE's campus. After this summer, the HOPE Village Freedom Schools will expand to serve more children and create a pipeline of opportunity for children and families in the community. These programs are part of the HOPE Village Initiative, a long-term initiative to ensure that by 2031, 100% of HOPE Village residents are educationally well-prepared, economically self-sufficient, and living in a safe and supportive environment.
