THE STORY:

Olivia Gladu wrote -

The HHS Girls Soccer team has decided to participate in the Boston Common Costume Dash of 2016 to raise money for Soccer Without Borders. We are very excited to support this incredible organization because we believe that kids and teens should have a chance to learn to play the sport to make a positive impact on their lives. Soccer Without Borders is using soccer as a vehicle for positive change for underprivileged kids. It is giving kids in the US and abroad a chance to learn and play soccer to help them cope with their traumatic backgrounds or everyday lives. So SWB has teamed up with Positive Tracks to help kids around the world. Positive Tracks will double the donations to SWB. When we raise $1000, they will donate another $1000. Every year, approximately 70,000 refuges and 500,000 immigrants come to the US seeking opportunity. This is difficult because newcomer families often find themselves culturally isolated in areas of violence and poverty. In the US they are looking to help participants build long lasting friendships with other kids, and mentor/mentee relationships. This plays a vital role in their integration into the US. Since 2007, 95% of SWB participants have graduated high school. SWB wants to help individuals reach their inherent potential. SWB International wants to give girls the opportunities to reach their true potential by using sports to help girls do better in class and to help them gain confidence. Of the world's 265 million soccer players, LESS than 10% are women. In some regions of the world that can be below 3%. Safe spaces, parental permission, and financial and material resources are the three main reasons girls are being held back. SWB's strategy for this is to engage girls with female role-models, trust-building parents, opportunities for material and education resources, and community advocacy. Girls who play sports do better in the classroom, gain confidence and raise their self-esteem, enjoy the physical benefits, and are less likely to engage in risky behavior. SWB and Positive Tracks is taking one step at a time to help underprivileged kids reach their full potential. http://www.soccerwithoutborders.org/
