BENEFITING: Horizons For Homeless Children
ORGANIZER: Horizons For Homeless Children
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
I was never a runner growing up. I recall running a 5k in 5th grade where I would sprint, walk, repeat. The experience must not have been that great since I didn’t run that far again until I was 29. Fast forward three more years, and I’ve decided to try to tackle my first marathon to help raise money for a great organization – Horizons for Homeless Children.
The Horizons mission is simple but powerful – “to improve the lives of young homeless children in Massachusetts and help their families succeed by providing high-quality early education, opportunities for play, and comprehensive family support services.”
I first learned about Horizons at a fundraising breakfast in 2008. Unlike other charitable events I've attended that can feel somewhat disconnected from the cause, I was so moved by the stories I heard that morning and the passion of the people involved with Horizons. It was amazing to see the positive impact that this organization has had in the community. I've now attended the same breakfast four years in a row and have also made it a point to attend other events hosted by Horizons whenever possible.
As part of getting married to my wonderful wife this past September, we each chose to make a donation to an organization we truly admired in lieu of gifts for our guests. I chose Horizons, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to learn just weeks later that Horizons had its own team running the Boston Marathon.
I'm honored to be part of the Run for Homeless Children team and I hope you’ll support both me and this great organization.
