Every 45th child in the U.S. grows up in a car, in a shelter, in chaos.
Homelessness subjects children to toxic stress that stunts their development. Luckily, the adverse effects can be countered by educational play and early education.
Where had you been today if you had grown up without a home?
I would not have been where I am today if I had not grown up in a home, surrounded by the many support systems that have allowed me to grow. That includes all of you - friends who give me purpose and strength, on a daily basis and at given moments in time.
This year, I am celebrating my 25th birthday by running the Boston Marathon in support of the children who were not as lucky in the initial lottery of life. I have never run that far before, and training in the Boston weather is a challenge in itself, but I feel like you are all with me every step of the way. I am so grateful for your love and support. By raising $5,000, we can open another playspace that will give more homeless children the opportunity to live, learn, play, and reach their full potential. I can't think of a better way to start off this year. I have everything I could wish for, so please make any birthday gift an investment that makes homeless children feel the same.
Homeless Children are:
- 2 times more likely to have learning disabilities
- 3 times more likely to have behavioral problems
- 8 times more likely to repeat a grade
Play mitigates the effects of stress. Quality early education reduces the adverse effects of childhood homelessness, and it is the most effective way to ensure future school success. Investments in early education reduce the need for costly services later in a child's life.
For every dollar invested in early education, 17 dollars are saved. How is that for a tax payer investment?
As a playspace and policy/advocacy volunteer at Horizons for Homeless Children, I see first-hand how the organization combats family homelessness. It provides holistic services to meet pressing needs, and pushes policymakers to create lasting change and sustainable solutions. I support this remarkable work that gives homeless children a shot at the worry-free lives they deserve. Will you?
