BENEFITING: Hostage US
Every year, 200-300 US citizens are taken hostage overseas. Being kidnapped abroad is an incredibly frightening and lonely experience. Once safely returned home, trying to readjust to normal life after being held captive can be extremely challenging. We at Hostage US provide services to help returning hostages and their families reintegrate into life by offering access to professional psychiatric, medical, dental, legal, and financial advisory care.
Being kidnapped creates a profound sense of isolation, as there are no existing support groups for former hostages that allow for shared connections over their experiences. This seclusion exacerbates the healing process. We are raising money to change that by creating a network of former hostages to share their stories with others who have been through similar experiences. It is incredibly empowering to have an outlet for open communication and to know that you are not alone in the healing process.
Through this fundraiser, we will fund a weekend-long retreat for returned hostages to join together and share their experiences, hardships, and hope in a safe space. We will also create a series of short, autobiographical films of returned hostages where they can present their stories of "surviving survival" and share useful coping mechanisms throughout their reintegration process for the benefit of others who have been kidnapped.
