The homeowner is an 89 yr old retired Grumman Engineer, who for decades paid for Homeowner, Flood, & Fire insurance for her home built in 1935 on a canal in Babylon Village. She is one of those pioneers who trained to fly airplanes for the Women Air Corps while working as a secretary during WWII, so she could deliver airplanes from their point of manufacture to point of distribution(non-combat role). The war ended before she could serve in this capacity, but she received flight training. After the war she attended Columbia University and, as a woman earned her Bachelor Degree in Engineering graduating in 1953. In 196?, she was hired by the Grumman Corporation to work for the Lunar Module Program. She worked for them until her retirement at the age of 72.
The home was inundated by 2 feet of water which washed away the decades of cherished collectibles and bundles of books she had compiled. The floor supports and foundation to her home were damaged and her home is now shifter on it's foundation such that the front and rear doors do not even shut so the home cannot be secured. I an a 45 year old man who has cared for Gloria since 1993. I can no longer work as Gloria needs full-time care but I am also responsible to ensure the restoration of Gloria's home. My time is divided between these two responsibilities and so it is a struggle to get anything accomplished.
