BENEFITING: Housing Works, Inc.
ORGANIZER: Housing Works, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Housing Works has been around since 1990 and was created by 4 members of ACT UP. They decided to focus their efforts on the tens of thousands of homeless New Yorkers who had HIV and AIDS. The organization has grown astronomically since then and they continue to do AMAZING work. Housing Works was their name because they fundamentally believed that housing is a human right and that stable housing was the key to helping HIV-positive people stay healthy. The philosophy WORKS! I have seen it firsthand.
I personally am running the NYC marathon for a few reasons. #1. I grew up in NYC and it will always be home to me. #2. To prove to myself that I can run 26.2 miles before my 30th birthday. #3. In honor of my dad who died too young at the age of 54 from a massive heart attack. I vowed to take care of my health so that I can be around to watch the next generation of people I love grow up. The race takes place on the 7th anniversary of his passing so what better time to honor him?
I chose Housing Works for a few reasons as well. #1. I know someone who works in their housing department and I know for a fact that their organization does amazing work. #2. HIV/AIDS has plagued my community (and also the heterosexual community) and so much more work is left to do that will undo the stigmatization and criminalization of HIV. #3. I not-so-secretly would LOVE to work for this amazing organization after I graduate from my masters in social work program this spring.
Thank you all so much for your contribution and your time!!! Get ready to cheer me on while I rep Housing Works and all that they do!!!!
