THE STORY:

I'm a member of the 2016 New York City Marathon Housing Works Braking AIDS team, and I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about one of New York’s greatest organizations and to ask for your support to my fundraising efforts to such an important cause.

Since starting its activities in the 1990s, Housing Works has housed and provided supportive services to over 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV / AIDS. The early history of Housing Works goes back to 1990, when four members of the legendary AIDS activist group ACT UP decided to dedicate themselves to serving one of New York City’s most neglected populations: the tens of thousands of homeless men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS in the city’s streets.

Beyond leading countless fundraising efforts and providing support to those facing extreme hardship, Housing Works engages in relentless advocacy fighting for funding and legislation to ensure that all people living with HIV/AIDS have access to quality housing, healthcare, HIV prevention information and other life-sustaining services, as well as legal protections from stigma and discrimination.

Most importantly, Housing Works pioneered the concept of social enterprise–businesses whose profits fund the mission of a parent not-for-profit organization. It runs multiple thrift stores, a café and even a catering company in New York. This model provides an important source of revenue to its operating budget as well as employment opportunities to the community.

This is a great model, but Housing Works still relies on the generous support of thousands of volunteers and donors to continue to fight for the dignity and inclusion of those that are marginalized as the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States.

As I continue to train to the New York City Marathon in early November, I have a goal of fundraising at least $4,200 to Housing Works ($100 per kilometer!), and I hope you will make a contribution to this cause – no contribution is too small and every dollar counts.

Thank you!
