Did you know that 75% of girls with low self-esteem engage in harmful behaviors such as smoking, drinking, bullying, and disordered eating? Jada, a local 9 year-old, has seen the effects of low self-esteem, including bullying, and tells us “some girls are afraid to step up to bullies… They’re afraid that people will talk about them just based on what they look like, the clothes they’re wearing, if they don’t have a lot of money.”
At Girls Empowerment Network (GEN), we’re helping girls change their painful and detrimental beliefs about themselves. Jada tells us why she’s excited for GEN’s We Are Girls Conference. “An event just for girls is exciting! It means learning new things and to have a good group of people.”
The We Are Girls Houston Conference is one month away: Saturday, April 29th. This special day connects girls to relatable role models and encourages healthy relationships, educational discovery, and creative self-expression. This year’s theme is “Find Your Power!”. Houston girls need more opportunities like this one.
Yet so many girls can’t afford the $30 ticket price to attend We Are Girls Houston. As someone who values girls and wants them to value themselves, we ask: Will you scholarship a girl like Jada to this life-changing event for just $30?
Jada’s mom, Tracey, encourages others to scholarship girls, so that everyone has the chance to attend. “I think the conference will be good for girls because a lot of girls don’t have anybody to talk to… At the conference they will be able to ask questions and tell people how they are feeling. At this age it is important for them to feel like they can have somebody to talk to.”
$30 will send a lucky local girl to have this empowering experience and we need your help to provide this opportunity to over 50% of 1,600 attendees.
If you can’t donate, help girls find their power by volunteering at We Are Girls. Visit www.wearegirls.org for more information. But if you have the means, every $30 contributed makes sure that a girl has a seat at the table.
