How Long Can I Stand on the Street Corner Asking for Money?
Organized by: Tiffany Smith
There is no sugar coating to Heather's situation. Two years ago, Heather and her husband, Justin, were both working and providing a stable home for their seven year old daughter, Ella. The family was out for a walk and Heather fell off a platform breaking her leg in eleven places. The doctors said she will never walk normally again and she hasn't. Two weeks after the accident Justin lost his job and within the next two months they lost their apartment. They stayed with an elderly friend, until he passed away. From there they lived with a friend whose lease was not renewed and found themselves homeless with in 3 days.
Since then it has been shelters, hopelessness, and hotels. No one wants to hire a middle aged woman with a glaring limp. Justin works as a carpenter when he can find work. This has not been enough to secure $1200 for the deposit and first months rent for an apartment.
Heather spent last winter holding a sign and tears up thinking about it again. I took her a hot chocolate in the rain one day and she embraced me with a huge hug. I was the first person to talk to her in four hours. She doesn't know what else to do. "We're stuck and we can't get out. We're just stuck!"
Let's give Heather and her family a hand when they need it most. My goal is to have them in an apartment by Thanksgiving. To do this I need your help.
