THE STORY:

Rick Hoyt was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth.  Unable to control the use of his muscles, he is bound to a chair.  In 1977, Rick told his dad he wanted to run a 5-mile race to help raise money for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Dick, a non-runner pushed Rick for the full 5 miles, and they finished next to last.  Later that night, Rick typed "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."  And that is when it all started!

"YES YOU CAN!!  - you can do anything you want to, as long as you make up your mind that you can do it. " -Dick & Rick Hoyt (Team Hoyt)

The message has been clear from childhood on.  Who has not heard the children’s story,” The Little Engine that Could “? And who among us was not saturated with the campaign slogan, “Yes We Can” during the 2008 Presidential campaign?

Yet still we all have mornings when we wake up with no motivation, or give up on a hard task when the going gets rough.  The phrasing may have become hackneyed, but the inspiration is still there …IF we chose to look beyond the marketing and see a living example of enduring to the end in the Hoyt’s.  Certainly not all of us deal with an obstacle like cerebral palsy, but there ARE mountains and valleys in each of our journeys, both gray clouds and sunny days.  The Hoyt’s inspire me with the fact that they not only push through, but that they do it for each other.

I intend on running the Boston Marathon for all those who can’t. For the millions with physical and emotional disabilities, for the thousands that have never been encouraged to try, for the hundreds that lack the resources, and for the ONE that is just waiting for someone to care enough to run for them.

I qualified to run Boston with my time, but I CHOOSE to run Boston with the Hoyt’s and feel so honored to have the opportunity. I know that when I run I experience a new freedom, a “runner’s high” that I think ALL people deserve to experience.  By raising awareness and money for the Hoyt Foundation, I hope to give more disabled young people confidence, a chance, a “leg up” in their own personal “marathons.”

Please join me in letting those with disabilities know that they are never alone, No matter what they face.

Thank you in advance for your support. Together we CAN make a difference!

XO
