A child born to a woman enslaved in the sex trade has almost no chance of escaping that same fate. But those odds are improving in Kalighat, Kolkata, thanks to New Light, a nonprofit community development project and charitable trust that provides shelter, educational opportunities, recreational facilities, healthcare and legal aid to the children and women of one of the oldest red light districts in India.
Small sums of money can make a big difference in the lives of victims of trafficking, vulnerable women forced into prostitution and their deprived children. A gift of just $60 will feed a child for one month or cover the cost of school supplies for one year.
