For the past four years, I have had the privilege of teaching at Waterside School- a small independent school in Stamford, Connecticut. Waterside School provides children too often under served access to opportunities for educational and personal excellence. In turn, the school prepares its students for positions of leadership and responsibility, with the hope that they will transcend the gaps in achievement and opportunity that exist between children with the benefit of resources and children from low income families.
At Waterside School, every family pays whatever tuition they can afford for their children. However, tuition revenues cover only 7 percent of Waterside’s operating budget, so we look to generous donors to provide the balance of monies that allows the school to flourish and grow. These donors- along with the school’s passionate faculty and its highly involved parent body- help ensure that the students’ talents and rigorous efforts- not their circumstances- shape their futures and dreams.
I’m lucky enough to be teaching the same group of students for the third year in a row. These fifth graders are about to embark upon the very stressful process of applying to some of the best independent schools in the country; our goal is that they will each earn full scholarships through high school.
Needless to say, this year is a game changer for my students; Waterside School has completely changed the trajectories of their lives. My students must be resilient, focused, and dedicated as they navigate a placement process that is as stressful and competitive as applying to college. Fortunately, Waterside has taught them to embrace a challenge; each day they make the daily commitment to "work hard, be kind, and respect learning."
In keeping with their unwavering sense of commitment, Greg and I are running in their honor. Their experience at Waterside, their access to further quality education, and the school itself is only a reality because of the generosity of corporate and private donors who believe in our mission. Please consider supporting this important cause. Any donation- whether large or small- makes a big difference for these children. Many Thanks in advance
