Having had a brush with MRSA - methycillin resistant staphylococcus aureus - this last July, I have been made personally aware of the dangers of antibiotic resistance caused by the food we eat. Even if you are a vegetarian you may not be entirely off the hook because the manure spread on fields, river water and the water table below can be contaminated with the antibiotics administered to animals.
I grew up on a farm in the north of England and although we used all sorts of nasty fertilizers on the soil and toxic chemicals in the sheep dip (this was in the 50's and early 60's, before we knew about Rachel Carson), our animals were free roaming and the only antibiotics ever administered were curative, in response to an actual infection, not prophylactic as is common in feedlots and battery farms.
Health Care Without Harm is running this fantastic campaign to reduce the use of antibiotics in farm animals and in the food we eat at home, at work and in our hospitals. Any donation you can make to the cause would be incredibly welcome.
