EVENT DATE: Apr 09, 2014
Every Pesach the Year in Israel Program of the Hebrew Union College sends a delegation of 1st Year Rabbinical, Cantorial, and Education students to the Former Soviet Union. The students visit communities that were under the thumb of Soviet Oppression and for whom a Jewish Identity is a newly realized dream. In that place, on Pesach, the Exodus takes on an entirely new meaning.
While in the FSU the Students learn from the Kehilot they visit about the lives and the cultures of those who have remained in Eastern Europe. They assist in leading and taking part in the Pesach Seder; experiencing Jewish Peoplehood in a once in a lifetime opportunity.
This is ultimately a trip of self-selection. Each participant has chosen to leave behind the safety and ease of their community in Jerusalem- to travel abroad in pairs. They will be traveling to a land where they do not speak the language, nor are they familiar with the customs. They are returning to being strangers- wanderers in a land not their own. Additionally each of these students has chosen that "Next Year In Jerusalem" will, for them, once again be a dream to be attained in the future.
It is up to each Student to raise the necessary funds to participate in this trip. Donations will cover Flights, Food and Lodging, Intra-Country Travel Expenses, and Translators.
Donors will be able to check in and keep up with the volunteers through a variety of exclusive digital mediums, on a select Facebook Group, Twitter Account, and Blog. They will also receive a special collection of D'vrai Torah, from the volunteers, as well as a "Thank You" digital photo album with commentary from the volunteers. Other thank you gifts will be forthcoming.
